About the project
This is the Cape Breton Highlands.
An independent, veteran-founded community project I created to celebrate the people, places, heritage, and local businesses of the Cape Breton Highlands.
Our beginning
The community came first.
I’m Dave Cameron, a retired Royal Canadian Air Force veteran with family roots in Cape North and the Aspy Valley going back generations. In 2013, I started the Cape Breton Highlands Facebook Group to connect people who live in, grew up in, visit, or love the Highlands, and give them a place to share photographs, stories, memories, and local news.
As that community grew, so did the project. The website brings together local stories, photographs, community guides, and Highland Spotlights in one place.
My purpose is to celebrate the Highlands and help preserve its heritage, while giving local businesses, artists, makers, and community groups a free way to be discovered. I want residents and visitors to find the people and local knowledge that make this place special.

Independent by design
A community project with its own purpose.
Cape Breton Highlands is independent of Cape Breton Highlands National Park. We are not operated by the Park and do not speak on its behalf. Cape Breton Highlands National Park is a significant part of the region, and the wider Highlands are also home to Mi’kmaw people and coastal communities with histories of their own. This project is about the people, communities, and stories of the Highlands.
